SPU gathered as a community on Saturday, 29 November 2025 for the annual Vice Chancellor’s Family Fun Day, a celebration that carried special meaning this year as it marked Professor Andrew Crouch’s final Family Fun Day as Vice-Chancellor and Principal. The event brought staff and their families together under the theme Celebrating Success Together Honouring Legacy Embracing the Future, creating a warm and reflective atmosphere that honoured the journey the University has walked during his tenure.
During the programme, Professor Crouch delivered a heartfelt message that echoed the sentiments shared at his farewell ceremony earlier that week. He spoke about the importance of servant leadership and described how staying close to people shaped his approach to guiding the University through moments of growth and challenge. He reflected on his return to Kimberley during the COVID-19 pandemic and how small daily acts, such as walking the campus and speaking to students, helped build a culture of shared responsibility and pride. He highlighted the strength of the University community and thanked staff, partners and families for their unwavering support throughout his tenure. In his closing words, he expressed sincere gratitude and said “Thank you for your support and thank you for giving me the opportunity to be your leader for just under six years. I cherish this moment. I will come back to SPU and I want to find a clean campus,” he added with a light hearted smile.
Following his message, the day unfolded into a joyful and uplifting celebration as staff and their families enjoyed friendly competitions, games and shared moments of connection. The appearance of Gemmie, the University mascot, added excitement for young attendees and contributed to the spirit of unity that was become a defining feature of this event.
As SPU looks to the future, the unity and warmth shown at the Family Fun Day reflect the strong foundation Professor Crouch leaves behind. The gathering served as both a celebration and a gentle farewell, honouring a leader who helped shape a confident and growing institution rooted in access, transformation and service to the Northern Cape. The day closed with gratitude, marking the end of an era and the beginning of a new chapter for the University community.
