Sol Plaatje University (SPU) successfully hosted an Alumni Breakfast meeting on Saturday, 28 October 2023, in Upington. The gathering was organised by University Registrar, Dr Jody Cedras, and the Alumni Office.
This event offered alumni a valuable opportunity to network, reconnect with their alma mater, and strengthen their relationship with the University. Among those present were Advocate Anthony Mac Minn, Centre Manager for the Centre for Entrepreneurship & Rapid Incubator (CfERI); Mr Thabo Moshe, President of Convocation; and Tshepisho Sebeela from the Alumni Office in the Department of Institutional Advancement.
Dr Cedras extended a warm welcome to all attendees and provided an insightful overview of the university’s ongoing developments. He highlighted that SPU now offers a total of 34 qualifications and is in the process of transforming its Schools into Faculties. Additionally, newly branded ties were distributed to Executive Committee members of Convocation.
Advocate Mac Minn, in his opening remarks, emphasised that SPU’s influence extends beyond its Kimberley campuses to include a significant presence in Upington through CfERI. The Centre supports both budding and established entrepreneurs in the ZF Mgcawu District by serving as an incubator. He also underscored the potential for alumni to use their qualifications to start and manage their own enterprises, thus becoming employers themselves.
The breakfast event also revealed that Ms Angelene Maxwell is not only an alumna but also a client of CfERI. The Centre is currently aiding her in the launch and growth of her small to medium-sized enterprise (SMME), which focuses on producing health solutions from Cancer Bush (Lessertia frutescens).
