Sol Plaatje University is proud to showcase the continued success of our alumni, as they make significant strides in their careers and passions. Boitumelo Makgoka, a 2019 graduate and a bright star in the realms of theatre and music, captivated audiences with her performance in “The Orange Dress” – a production that recently received critical acclaim at the National Arts Festival in Makhado.
This evocative play place in the stark confines of a prison cell, where the audience is introduced to the stories of six imprisoned souls through a series of diary entries. The cast, donning orange overalls, embodies characters from diverse walks of life, including a traditional healer, a model, a mother, and voices from the LGBTQI+ community. Linked by the pervasive issue of gender-based violence, their narratives unfold with an interplay of poignant drama, soulful music, and spirited dance.
Ms Makgoka’s portrayal of a transgender woman struggling against societal scorn and the complexities of identity was lauded for its depth and sensitivity. Her journey from an SPU graduate to a beacon of inspiration on the stage is a testament to the rich talent nurtured at our university.
Beyond the footlights, Ms Makgoka’s commitment to heritage and culture remains unwavering. While her role at the South African Heritage Resources Agency (SAHRA) in Cape Town allows her to contribute to the preservation of national heritage, her heart beats in unison with the rhythm of the creative arts.
The National Arts Festival is renowned for its celebration of outstanding talent across various disciplines, and we wish Ms Makgoka all the best as she continues to excel and inspire both on and off the stage.
