SPU’s Centre for Entrepreneurship Development and Research (CEDAR), established in December 2022, has a strong focus on building a vibrant entrepreneurial ecosystem that drives economic growth in the Northern Cape through pedagogy, entrepreneurship development, and research. The Centre held its 2nd Annual Regional Entrepreneurship Conference at SPU’s South Campus Multipurpose Hall, from 12 to 13 March 2025.
Over these two days, industry leaders, academics, and aspiring entrepreneurs came together to bridge the gap between theory and practice – exploring impactful solutions for economic growth in the Northern Cape. Day one of the conference was officially opened by Acting CEDAR Director, Prof Ricardo Peters, who welcomed all valuable guests, staff and students.
Key highlights include incredible presenters such as Prof Stella Bvuma, who delivered an insightful presentation on AI & cloud computing and spoke on scalable, ethical, and sustainable business growth, Dr Maphelo Malgas presented on financial inclusion in township economies and unlocking the potential of unregistered businesses. SPU Lecturer, Dr Edward Dakora spoke about the powerful shift that happens when innovation meets with a powerful mindset change. SPU Lecturer Dr Johann van der Spuy, gave insight into the challenges in business incubation: Deficiencies and solutions for the Northern Cape and Mrs Refilwe Xaba, founder and CEO of GloLooks presented on the 7C’s of Youth Entrepreneurship.
Day two highlights include an insightful presentation by Mr Crespen Ndlovu and Ms Maraka Lefera who spoke about the reality of studentpreneurship in the current economy. Mompreneur Mrs Keneilwe Goeieman (Founder of Keneilwe Lactations) shared her inspiring journey of building a business that supports breastfeeding mothers through galactagogue-bearing cookies.
Panel Discussion with Entrepreneurship Development in Higher Education (EDHE) SPU, Student Women Economic Empowerment Programme (SWEEP) SPU & ENACTUS SPU – Student entrepreneurs shared their achievements, experiences, and how they balance leadership roles with academics. A speed Networking session was held where students engaged with key stakeholders in a rapid Q&A session, gaining valuable insights and advice. The event wrapped up with closing remarks from SPU Lecturer, Dr Gail Motlhaudi, thanking speakers, students, and stakeholders for making this conference a resounding success.
Through SPU’s CEDAR, the university aims to transform lives and provide growth opportunities – not only of minds but of the broader landscape of the Northern Cape through a consistent pursuit to invest in its people.
