SPU ENACTUS, a student entrepreneurship initiative under the Centre for Entrepreneurship Development and Research (CEDAR) has had major success with one of the enterprises that are registered and affiliated to the programme.
Farmily is a social impact registered enterprise that mobilizes the backyards of homeowners for the planting of vegetables using a non-dig system composing of recycled materials and a greywater system. This enterprise empowers homeowners to become farmers in their own right; whilst assisting in producing vegetables that can be sold to students at a reduced cost.
This enterprise focuses on achieving social impact through ensuring that there is quality food for students at rates that they can afford. The enterprise has been in conception over the 2024 period and pitched the idea within the Ford C3 Challenge and AVI limited Competitions of ENACTUSZA.
Their progress in developing and implementing their idea won them R12 000 within the Ford C3 challenge. Due to their achievement; they were recognized by AVI Limited, a company affiliated to ENACTUSZA, as one of only six universities eligible to apply for funding due to progress of their idea. They were further awarded an additional R45 000 from AVI Limited for the 2024 year period; which was announced in January 2025.
This enterprise project is one of the flagship enterprises that have come from the initiatives of the Economic Activation Office (EAO) within CEDAR. Farmily has also won an accelerator programme for the year 2025 with ENACTUSZA to assist them in ensuring growth and success of their concept.
