The Sol Plaatje Memorial Weekend, held on 4 and 5 October, was a profound celebration of Sol Plaatje’s legacy, uniting alumni, staff, special guests, important stakeholders, and students in reflection on his ideals of social justice, education, and community upliftment. Sol Plaatje University (SPU) reaffirmed its commitment to being a living embodiment of these principles through a series of impactful events.
The weekend commenced with the Annual Sol Plaatje Lecture, where Justice Albie Sachs delivered a thought-provoking address that challenged the audience to ask, “Is this the country we were fighting for?” Known for his remarkable contributions to human rights and constitutional law, Sachs urged everyone to view the Constitution as a doorway to freedom, emphasising the importance of human dignity and equality.
The lecture was attended by distinguished guests, including SPU Chancellor Justice Steven Majiedt, Dr Manne Dipico, Executive Deputy Chairman of De Beers, members of the Sol Plaatje family and the Sol Plaatje Trust, along with judges, magistrates, and representatives from the Northern Cape Provincial Government. Their presence highlighted a shared commitment to upholding the values that Sol Plaatje championed.
Sachs highlighted lessons from nations like Germany and India, focusing on the significance of an Independent Electoral Commission in safeguarding democracy. He also reminded the audience that human rights advocacy should embrace all emotions – joy, laughter, and seriousness – showcasing his wisdom and humility.
In his remarks, Justice Majiedt praised Sachs as a caring judge with the softest of hearts and acknowledged his impact on shaping South Africa’s democratic landscape. The lecture itself was a testament to SPU’s dedication to social justice, reflecting Sol Plaatje’s enduring commitment to fighting for freedom and equality.
Later that evening, at the Founder’s Dinner alumni, staff, students and dignitaries gathered to celebrate SPU’s rich legacy and the individuals who have played a vital role in its journey. Prof Andrew Crouch, Vice-Chancellor and Principal of SPU, emphasised the importance of alumni engagement, encouraging graduates to stay connected to their alma mater, nurturing a lifelong relationship of growth and support.
During the dinner, alumna Ms Deolene Kriel shared her inspiring journey from SPU student to Junior Lecturer in the Faculty of Education, crediting her achievements to the University’s unwavering support and the quality of education she received. Her story highlighted the impact of SPU on its graduates and encouraged fellow alumni to continue contributing to the university’s mission of advancing education and uplifting communities.
The following day featured the Standard Bank Chancellor’s Golf Day, a fundraising initiative led by Justice Majiedt, successfully raising R295 750 for the Talent Pipeline Programme (TPP). This programme identifies and nurtures top-performing learners from Grade 10 in the Northern Cape, aligning with Sol Plaatje’s vision of education as a catalyst for transformation.
Majiedt summed up the spirit of the day by stating, “As long as we invest in the future, there is hope.” Prof Crouch highlighted the impact of the TPP, noting that 60% of its matriculants have applied to SPU, showcasing the programme’s role in building social capital and academic excellence. Mr Jerome Crowder, Head: Provincial Public Sector at Standard Bank, expressed gratitude to SPU for creating this initiative, which allows the bank to give back to the community and uplift future leaders.
The inaugural Alumni Homecoming marked a significant milestone for SPU, offering a platform for alumni to reconnect, reflect, and celebrate their bond with the university. The day included a campus tour that showcased SPU’s growth and transformation since its establishment, followed by indigenous games through which we fostered a deep sense of connection with our alumni. These activities honoured Sol Plaatje’s legacy through unity and engagement, making it a memorable celebration of our shared values.
The Sol Plaatje Memorial Weekend united the SPU community in a powerful tribute to our namesake’s ideals of education and upliftment. Guided by his principles of justice, equality, and knowledge, SPU reaffirms its commitment to shaping a brighter future and being a catalyst for positive change in the lives of our students and the broader community. Inspired by his legacy, we continue to build on the foundation he laid, ensuring his vision endures through every SPU student and graduate.
