Human Rights Dialogue

SPU’s Division for Student Affairs will host a Human Rights Dialogue on 15 March 2023 from 15:30- 17:30 at the Library Auditorium on Central Campus.

This year, the Human Rights Dialogue will see the participation of two esteemed thought leaders namely, Professor Muhammed Haron (Research Associate and Professor of Religious Studies) and Mr Imtiaz Cajee (nephew to slain apartheid activist Ahmed Timol and Author) on the topic: “Race Relations in Contemporary South Africa: Addressing the Complex Challenges of Cohesion and Diversity Through Human Rights”.

In working to promote and protect human rights for all citizens with South Africa, the Human Rights dialogue forms an integral part of the University’s co-curricular student programme in sharing much needed knowledge and insights on conversations surrounding the apartheid legacy in South Africa. In commemorating the 63rd anniversary of Sharpeville massacre, the Human Rights Day programme aims to shed light on the struggle towards the attainment of human rights in South Africa and the sacrifices made by those who fought for both freedom and equality.

Human Rights Day is commemorated nationally in March in South Africa and is centred around the premise of South Africa’s complex apartheid era history that adopted a system of racial segregation and discrimination, widespread human rights abuses formed part of government’s approach in repressing and marginalizing ethnic groups in the country. With the advent of freedom in 1994, South Africa still finds itself grappled by the ever-pressing socio-economic challenges stemming from an unjust system.
