On Thursday, 15 August 2024, Sol Plaatje University (SPU) hosted its second-semester Career Fair during which students could explore career opportunities and connect with potential employers.
The Career Fair, organised by the Career Services Office, is a strategic initiative to bridge the gap between academic learning and professional employment. By connecting students directly with potential employers, SPU fosters an environment where students can actively engage with the labour market. This aligns with our university’s goal of producing graduates who are not only academically proficient but also ready to meet the demands of the workforce.
The Career Fair was a vibrant and dynamic event, bustling with students eager to embark on their professional journeys. Employer representatives from a diverse array of industries participated, showcasing their interest in recruiting SPU students – a testament to the university’s growing reputation for producing capable and work-ready graduates. These employers, including prominent names such as Statistics SA, Auditor General South Africa, SANRAL, and Nestle SA Pty Ltd, expressed their eagerness to engage with our students, offering internship programmes and career opportunities tailored to the specific needs of SPU graduates.
Throughout the day, students had the chance to discuss potential career paths, enquire about job opportunities, and receive valuable information from the attending organisations. The engagement didn’t stop at conversations; African Bank went a step further by running a competition for attendees, which culminated in Simphiwe Geco winning a laptop.
Ms Nicole Morris, Dean of Student Affairs, highlighted the significance of the event, stating, “It is commendable to see such a variety of companies take an active role in advancing the careers of students at Sol Plaatje University. This speaks to the importance of ensuring that our graduates are employable and align with labour market requirements, as reflected in the SPU Student Employability Survey. The presence of these organisations is instrumental in helping our students make meaning of their qualifications.”
We extend our heartfelt thanks to all the participating organisations, including Harambee / SA Youth, Independent Electoral Commission, Department of Employment and Labour, Services Seta, LGSETA, Public Investment Corporation SOC LTD, National Council of Persons with Disabilities, ABSA, and Standard Bank. Your involvement is vital in shaping the future of our students, ensuring they are well-prepared to achieve success in their careers.
