SPU female staff close-off Women’s Month in style

On Wednesday, 30 August 2023, female staff at Sol Plaatje University (SPU) gathered at Luka Jantjie House for an elegant brunch, marking the conclusion of this year’s Women’s Month. Hosted by SPU’s Employee Wellness Office and sponsored by First National Bank (FNB), the annual “Come Dressed to Impress” event aimed to cultivate social cohesion among the women of SPU’s diverse divisions.

The attendees enjoyed inspirational talks tackling issues including gender-based violence, financial well-being for women and female leadership.

SPU’s Vice-Chancellor and Principal Prof Andrew Crouch offered insights not just as the institution’s leader but also shared advice from a male perspective. He emphasised the importance of education as a tool for personal and community upliftment. “I encourage women to seek increased representation in leadership. The safeguarding of women in power must also be a priority,” said Prof Crouch. He further urged the support of women in politics and those leading organisations. “Take matters into your own hands – become the woman leader you want to see in the world,” he added.

Ms Phemelo Maretela, FNB Private Wealth Advisor, educated SPU women on being financial savvy, covering topics such as creating wills, obtaining life insurance and planning for retirement. Additionally, Ms Patricia Nyamandi from the Department of Justice spoke about the vital legal procedures women should be aware of in case they find themselves in abusive relationships or domestic disputes. She also encouraged women to stand up for one another and not look away when witnessing a case of domestic violence or abuse.

The event wasn’t all serious; prizes were awarded throughout the function, with a grand prize of R1 000 going to the best-dressed attendee. This year’s winner was Mrs Kehilwe Lesiba, an Administrator in the School of Natural and Applied Sciences.

August was a month of learning for SPU’s female staff, featuring presentations on sexual harassment by the CCMA, financial well-being by FNB, and gender-based violence prevention by Mr Moabi Mojalefa of the Kimberley Magistrate Court.

This brunch concluded the month on a high note, perfectly encapsulating the saying, ‘Wathint’ abafazi, wathint’ imbokodo’ (you strike a woman, you strike a rock).
