The South African Broadcasting Corporation’s flagship English-language radio station, SAFM (104–107 MHz FM), is thrilled to bring listeners an extraordinary literary journey by broadcasting a special reading of Sol Plaatje’s seminal novel, Mhudi, in celebration of its centenary edition.
About Mhudi
Set in the 1830s and drawing upon oral tradition, Mhudi tells the tale of Mhudi and Ra-Thaga, a romantic story set against a violent backdrop of war between Barolong, Boer, and Matebele. Mhudi, the heroine of the tale, stands as an inspirational figure—braver and wiser than those around her. Through her words and actions, she exposes the roots of many injustices that have plagued later generations in South Africa, particularly concerning land issues. At the same time, she offers hope and redemption for the future. The narrative transcends its historical setting to deliver timeless messages about humanity, resilience, love – and the quest for justice and freedom.
The reading experience
The reading is performed by the esteemed theatre, TV, and film actor, Sello Motloung. With his profound artistry and voice, he adds unique depth to the rich narrative of this classic novel. The reading will take place from Monday to Thursday, between 11:45am and 12pm, continuing until the novel is completed on air.
