Sol Plaatje University’s 2024 Birthday Colour Run was a resounding success, exceeding expectations and bringing together over 630 participants from across the province and beyond.
The event kicked off on a chilly August morning, but the atmosphere was far from cold. As participants of all ages gathered at the start line the energy was palpable as they prepared to take on the 5km, 10km, and 21.1km routes, each reflecting SPU’s commitment to promoting wellness and healthy living.
The colourful splash of powder at the start signaled the beginning of a celebration that emphasized both community and competition. People were also eager to capture the moment, with Gemmie, SPU’s beloved mascot. Children participating alongside their parents and friends added to the event’s inclusive, family-friendly atmosphere.
Our MCs for the day, Mr Jerry Kale, a Comrades Marathon bronze medalist, and Ms Nobulali Mathimba, Faculty Registrar in the Faculty of Natural and Applied Sciences, representing SPU, kept the crowd engaged and motivated. Their delightful commentary and energetic interactions with participants ensured that the joyous spirit of the Colour Run was maintained throughout the day.
The race itself offered an unexpected highlight – the first runner to cross the finish line was from the 10km race, arriving ahead of the 21.1km runners who had started earlier. This surprising finish underscored the determination and speed of our participants, some of whom traveled from as far as Lesotho, showcasing the growing recognition of our event beyond Kimberley and the Northern Cape.
This year’s event was further enhanced by the introduction of SPU’s Decade Celebration apparel, which was available for purchase alongside other offerings from various vendors. Vendors and sponsors played a crucial role in contributing to the day’s success, creating a festive atmosphere that was enjoyed by all. The energy and support provided along the route were commendable, motivating runners as they navigated the course.
The 2024 SPU Birthday Colour Run transformed the streets of Kimberley into a vibrant celebration of community and wellness. The event not only promoted healthy living but also reinforced SPU’s commitment to community engagement, solidifying the University’s role as an integral part of the region.
Reflecting on the success of this year’s Colour Run, we are proud of the excitement, unity, and positive atmosphere that marked the day. These achievements remind us of our strong community, and we look forward to continuing this tradition and building on our solid foundation in the years to come.
